The Income Tax Department has released the Excel Utility for ITR-5 for the Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, allowing eligible taxpayers to begin filing their income tax returns through the Income Tax e-Filing portal. The release completes another phase of this year's return filing rollout. Earlier, the department had enabled utilities and online filing for ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3 and ITR-4 before making the ITR-5 utility available.
Who can file ITR-5?
ITR-5 applies to several non-individual taxpayers, including:
- Partnership firms
- Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
- Associations of Persons (AOPs)
- Bodies of Individuals (BOIs)
- Cooperative societies
- Local authorities
- Artificial Juridical Persons (AJPs)
- Representative assessees under Section 160
- Business trusts
- Investment funds
- Certain trusts not required to file ITR-7
- Estates of deceased or insolvent persons
- Societies registered under the Societies Registration Act or corresponding state laws
Who cannot file ITR-5?
The following taxpayers are not eligible to use ITR-5:
- Individuals
- Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)
- Companies
- Taxpayers required to file returns using ITR-7 under the applicable provisions of the Income Tax Act
Eligible taxpayers can download the Excel utility, fill in the required details offline, validate the return, generate the JSON file, and upload it to the income tax e-filing portal to complete the filing process.
Filing timeline
The due dates for filing income tax returns for AY 2026-27 are:
- July 31, 2026 – Individual taxpayers
- August 31, 2026 – Non-audit business cases
- October 31, 2026 – Businesses requiring audit
- November 30, 2026 – Taxpayers requiring transfer pricing reports
